Does pet insurance cover your dog abroad? The 7 questions to ask before a trip

Quick answer

Do not assume your pet health insurance travels with you: many policies only cover vet costs in your country of residence, or cap foreign cover at a few weeks per year. Before a trip, ask your insurer the 7 questions below in writing (territory, trip length, emergencies vs routine, repatriation, liability, quarantine costs, claim currency). If the answers leave gaps, ask the same insurer to price a travel-specific pet add-on for your exact dates: closing the gap is usually possible, deciding if it is worth it is yours.

TL;DR

  • Pet HEALTH insurance (vet bills) and pet LIABILITY insurance (damage your dog causes) are different products: check both for travel.
  • The territory clause decides everything: 'valid in Spain' means exactly that.
  • Many policies that do cover trips cap them (for example 30 or 90 days per policy year): count your days.
  • Emergency-only is the norm abroad: routine care, vaccines and preventives are usually excluded outside your country.
  • Ask every question by email so the answer is enforceable at claim time.

This guide is a checklist, not a ranking: we do not name a best insurer because coverage varies wildly by country of residence, dog age and breed. The method instead: verify your own policy against these 7 questions, in writing. It is the same source-first method every guide on this site uses, applied to your policy instead of a regulation.

The 7 questions, in the order gaps appear

1. What is the territorial scope?

Ask literally: is my dog covered for vet treatment in [country]? Some policies say EU, some say Europe, some say worldwide except USA and Canada (where vet costs run highest), some say home country only.

2. Is there a trip-length cap?

Common pattern: coverage abroad only for trips up to N days, or N days total per policy year. If you slow-travel, this is the clause that bites.

3. Emergencies only, or also illness?

Abroad, many policies drop to accident-only. A gastroenteritis in week two would then be fully yours.

4. Is repatriation covered?

If the dog needs transport home for treatment, or if you are hospitalized and the dog needs boarding and return, who pays? This exists in some travel add-ons and almost never in base health policies.

5. Does my liability cover follow me?

Third-party damage (bites, traffic accidents) is a separate cover, sometimes inside home insurance. Ask for its territorial clause too, and see our guide on countries where dog liability insurance is mandatory.

6. Who pays quarantine or documentation failures?

If border control orders quarantine or returns the dog because paperwork failed, that cost is almost never insured. This is why the paperwork guides on this site exist.

7. How do foreign claims get paid?

Currency, original invoices, translation requirements, direct payment vs reimbursement, deadlines counted from treatment date. An unclaimable cover is not a cover.

How to use the answers

Put the 7 answers next to your itinerary. Uncovered days or uncovered countries mean either a travel add-on from your insurer, a standalone pet travel policy, or consciously self-insuring the gap: a choice, as long as it is a decision and not a surprise.

Frequently asked questions

Is pet travel insurance mandatory anywhere?

Health insurance for the dog, no. Liability insurance is mandatory in some places (Spain nationally under Law 7/2023, several German states): see our dedicated guide.

Does airline pet travel include any insurance?

No. Airline pet fees buy transport, not cover. Some airlines offer optional cargo insurance for the declared value of the animal, which is a different (and grim) thing from vet cover.

Is an EU pet passport an insurance document?

No. It is identity and vaccination paperwork. It has nothing to do with paying vet bills.

My policy covers 'Europe'. Does that include the UK and Switzerland?

Not necessarily: post-Brexit wording varies and Switzerland is not EU. Ask with country names, not regions.

What does an emergency vet visit abroad cost?

It varies too much by country to quote a number honestly: ask your insurer for their average foreign claim instead, and check a local clinic's price list at your destination. Any specific number you see on a blog without a source and date, distrust, ours included.

Should I buy cover for a 3-day city break?

Verify questions 1 and 3 on your existing policy first. For short trips inside your policy's territory, you may already be covered and need nothing.
