Traveling Spain with a large dog: train, plane and ferry, verified

Quick answer

With a dog over 10 kg in Spain, the winner is the train: Renfe's Dogs up to 40 kg extra costs 40 EUR on AVE, Avlo and Long Distance (the equivalent of a general-fare ticket on Avant and Media Distancia), bought up to 24 hours before departure, with your dog at the window seat and no carrier. Iryo runs a large-dog service for the same 40 EUR from its listed origin stations, with more friction. On Renfe's metric-gauge services, pets travel free on a leash with no weight limit. Flying, Iberia is the only airline of the three we track with a published hold limit (45 kg carrier included). Ouigo publishes no route for large dogs: only a 60x35x35 carrier.

TL;DR

  • Over 10 kg by rail your short list is Renfe and Iryo: Renfe's 40 kg extra covers AVE, Avlo, Long Distance, Avant and Media Distancia, while Iryo departs from its listed origin stations only.
  • Two verified free rules with no weight limit: Cercanias trains across the network, with leash and muzzle, and Renfe's metric-gauge services in the north, on a leash.
  • Flying, only Iberia publishes a hold limit (45 kg with the carrier, excluding snub-nosed and listed dangerous breeds, prior authorization required). Vueling carries no animals in the hold.
  • Balearia publishes pet options per ship (cabins and kennels) on its listed routes: check your exact crossing before booking.
  • Hotels decide per property: ask the weight cap in writing before booking, it is the first fine-print trap for large dogs.

Everything below comes from the official pages we track, each with its check date in the sources at the end. Over 10 kg, most generic advice collapses: the carrier rules that solve everything for small dogs stop applying, and what remains is a short list of verified doors. This guide walks them one by one.

By train: the short list is Renfe and Iryo

Renfe's Dogs up to 40 kg extra applies on AVE, Avlo, Long Distance, Avant and Media Distancia (the international AVE only on its Spanish leg). It costs 40 EUR on AVE, Avlo and Long Distance and the equivalent of a general-fare ticket on Avant and Media Distancia, bought up to 24 hours before departure. One large dog per passenger and a maximum of two per train, both in a single marked pet friendly coach, with your dog at the window seat next to you and no carrier. At the station, muzzle and a non-extensible leash are mandatory, and the vaccination booklet or microchip and rabies vaccinations. It is the travel document for pets that RESIDE in the EU: travelers arriving from">EU pet passport travels with the dog.

Iryo charges the same 40 EUR for its large-dog service but its page requires the adult ticket to be an Inicial Superior fare, and adds friction: a phone call, a printed and signed declaration, and being at its office 1.5 hours before departure. And it departs only from its listed origin stations: Madrid Atocha and Chamartin, Barcelona Sants, Valencia Joaquin Sorolla, Sevilla Santa Justa, Malaga Maria Zambrano, Cordoba and Zaragoza Delicias.

Ouigo publishes no route for a large dog: its General Transport Conditions allow only pets in a rigid, waterproof carrier of up to 60x35x35 cm. If your dog does not fit that box, Ouigo is not on your list.

The free doors: Cercanias and the metric gauge

We have verified two free rules with no weight limit. On Cercanias trains, pets travel free with leash and muzzle, no carrier, one per passenger, across the network. And where Renfe's metric-gauge services operate, in the north, they travel free on a leash. Cercanias covers all of Spain and so separates no regions: the metric gauge does, and it is the reason Cantabria and Asturias score in our regions ranking.

By plane: one published hold, and it is Iberia's

Of the three airlines we track, Iberia is the only one publishing hold conditions: up to 45 kg with the carrier included, excluding snub-nosed dogs and breeds on the dangerous-dogs list, with prior authorization through its booking offices. Air Europa also carries dogs in the hold but publishes no conditions on its page. Vueling carries no animals in the hold at all. The full cabin comparison for small dogs lives in our cabin guide.

By ferry: options per ship

Balearia's route listing, checked on 2026-08-27, departs the mainland from Barcelona, Denia and Valencia to the Balearics, from Algeciras to Ceuta, from Malaga and Almeria to Melilla and from Cadiz to the Canaries, and its pet page publishes cabin and kennel options per ship. A kennel does not ask your dog's weight the way a cabin bag does, but the option varies by vessel: check your exact crossing before booking.

Sleeping with a large dog

Hotel admission is per property everywhere, and the weight cap is the first fine-print trap for a large dog. Ask it in writing before booking, along with the rest of the 5 questions from our Spain hotels guide, and check the verified chains and the Paradores Pet Friendly list in our directory.

What we have not verified

Buses and urban transit vary by operator and city, and we publish only what we have checked. When a new source gets verified, this guide changes with its check date in plain sight.
