Cantabria with your dog
๐ Ranked 7 in our Top 10 Spanish regions to travel with a dog
Quick answer
Cantabria shares the northern rail profile: Renfe rules with the Dogs up to 40 kg extra on covered services marked with the paw icon, the general Cercanias rule of pets free with leash and muzzle, and metric-gauge Media Distancia services, where they operate, taking pets free on a leash without a weight limit. Iryo does not list Cantabrian origin stations. Chains with published pet programs are verified in our directory, and beach access is municipal and seasonal.
Getting there with your dog
By rail the verified path is Renfe: the Dogs up to 40 kg extra (40 EUR on AVE, Avlo and Larga Distancia, a general-fare ticket on Avant and Media Distancia, online up to 24 hours before) on trains marked with the paw icon, the general Cercanias rule, and metric-gauge services where they operate. Iryo's listed large-dog origin stations do not include Cantabria. Flying in, the cabin rules and fees for Iberia, Vueling and Air Europa are in our cabin guide.
Where to sleep
NH and B&B Hotels publish pet programs verified in our directory, and Paradores lists which of its properties admit pets. Per-hotel conditions always apply: close every booking with the 5 written questions from our Spain hotels guide, and sitter marketplaces with verified sites (Rover, Gudog) are in the directory for the stretches a hotel does not cover.
Verified dog-access beaches
Only the ones we checked on the council's own site, with the date. The list grows as we verify more, and municipal rules change with the season.
Molinucos and Segunda del Sardinero Santander
Two beaches in Santander with dog access, listed in the council's signed code of conduct.
- Molinucos is the pet friendly one: dog access 24 hours, no leash and no muzzle needed, except for breeds classed as dangerous, for which the document refers to Law 7/2023.
- Segunda del Sardinero allows dogs in summer, from 1 June to 30 September, only from 20.30 to 23.30, on a leash, with a muzzle for dogs classed as dangerous.
- Dogs must be vaccinated and dewormed, and you must carry the paperwork: microchip or passport, the vaccinations required in Cantabria, and insurance for dogs classed as potentially dangerous.
- Leash is required at all times except at Molinucos, dogs may not leave the permitted beach areas, and the adapted shower and unauthorised footbaths are off limits (Molinucos has its own dog shower).
Careful with the document's date
The code of conduct the council publishes is the one signed in July 2025 and we have found no 2026 version, although its title carries no year and describes the 1 June to 30 September season. The Segunda del Sardinero time window is the easiest thing to change from one year to the next: confirm it before going.

Frequently asked questions
Can my large dog take the train to Santander?
With Renfe yes, on trains marked with the paw icon at purchase, under the Dogs up to 40 kg extra (40 EUR on AVE, Avlo and Larga Distancia, a general-fare ticket on Avant and Media Distancia). Iryo's listed large-dog origin stations do not include Cantabria.
Do metric-gauge trains here take dogs free?
On Renfe's metric-gauge Media Distancia services, where they operate, pets travel free on a leash without a weight limit, per Renfe's own rules. Check whether your specific route runs on metric gauge before counting on it.
Are dogs allowed on the beaches?
It is decided beach by beach by each town hall and changes with the season. Check the current municipal ordinance of the specific beach: we publish verified beach lists only as we check them. The ones we have already checked are in the list on this page.
Which verified options help with lodging?
NH and B&B Hotels publish pet programs and Paradores lists its pet-admitting properties, all verified in our directory, plus sitter marketplaces with verified sites like Rover and Gudog. Conditions are always per property: ask the 5 written questions.
What do I do with my dog at museums or indoor sights that do not admit dogs?
Museums, monuments and most indoor venues do not admit dogs (assistance-dog rules are a separate track). The practical option is hourly sitters: our directory lists verified marketplaces like Rover and Gudog, with prices set by each sitter. Book ahead in high season.
Can I leave my dog alone in the hotel room?
It depends on the property: admission is per hotel and leaving a dog alone in the room is often forbidden or limited. Ask in writing before booking, it is one of the 5 questions in our Spain hotels guide, and for long visits check the hourly sitters in our directory.
