Galicia with your dog

Quick answer

Galicia travels with Renfe rules: the Dogs up to 40 kg extra applies on its covered services and Cercanias trains take pets free with leash and muzzle, while Iryo does not list Galician origin stations for its large-dog service. Chains with published pet programs are verified in our directory, sitter marketplaces like Rover operate in Spain with verified sites, and beach access on the rias is municipal and seasonal: check each town's current ordinance.

Getting there with your dog

By rail the verified path is Renfe: the Dogs up to 40 kg extra (40 EUR on AVE, Avlo and Larga Distancia, a general-fare ticket on Avant and Media Distancia, online up to 24 hours before) and the general Cercanias rule of pets free with leash and muzzle. Iryo's listed large-dog origin stations do not include Galicia, so for a large dog the Renfe scheme is the rail option. Flying in, the cabin rules and fees for Iberia, Vueling and Air Europa are in our cabin guide.

Where to sleep

NH and B&B Hotels publish pet programs verified in our directory, and Paradores lists which of its properties admit pets. Per-hotel conditions always apply: close every booking with the 5 written questions from our Spain hotels guide. For stretches where a hotel does not work, sitter and boarding marketplaces with verified sites (Rover, Gudog) are in the directory.

Verified dog-access beaches

Only the ones we checked on the council's own site, with the date. The list grows as we verify more, and municipal rules change with the season.

Bens beach A Coruna

Bens beach in A Coruna. Its municipal beach ordinance gives it the status of 'playa canina'.

  • Users with dogs may go all year round, and the ordinance exempts it from the summer ban that applies to the city's other beaches.
  • Dogs must be under permanent and direct control at all times so they do not disturb other users.
  • Waste must be picked up immediately.

Careful on the city's other beaches

On A Coruna's other beaches, article 9 bans dogs and other pets from 1 June to 30 September, and outside that period it does not ban them. The council may designate dog areas, temporary or permanent, where dogs can be off leash regardless of the time of year, signposted at the main accesses. The same article authorises rescue dogs and assistance dogs trained in officially recognised centres.

Frequently asked questions

Can my large dog take the train to Galicia?

With Renfe yes, on trains marked with the paw icon at purchase, under the Dogs up to 40 kg extra (40 EUR on AVE, Avlo and Larga Distancia, a general-fare ticket on Avant and Media Distancia, online up to 24 hours before). Iryo's large-dog origin stations do not include Galicia.

Can I walk the Camino de Santiago with my dog?

Many people do, but we have not verified albergue policies yet and each one decides its own admission, like hotels. Until our verified Camino guide lands, apply the 5 written questions from our hotels guide to every albergue or pension on your route.

Are dogs allowed on Galician beaches?

It is decided beach by beach by each town hall and changes with the season. Check the current municipal ordinance of the specific beach: we publish verified beach lists only as we check them. The ones we have already checked are in the list on this page.

Which verified options help with lodging in Galicia?

NH and B&B Hotels publish pet programs and Paradores lists its pet-admitting properties, all verified in our directory, plus sitter marketplaces with verified sites like Rover and Gudog. Conditions are always per property.

What do I do with my dog at museums or indoor sights that do not admit dogs?

Museums, monuments and most indoor venues do not admit dogs (assistance-dog rules are a separate track). The practical option is hourly sitters: our directory lists verified marketplaces like Rover and Gudog, with prices set by each sitter. Book ahead in high season.

Can I leave my dog alone in the hotel room?

It depends on the property: admission is per hotel and leaving a dog alone in the room is often forbidden or limited. Ask in writing before booking, it is one of the 5 questions in our Spain hotels guide, and for long visits check the hourly sitters in our directory.
