TravelingWithDog

Region of Murcia with your dog

Quick answer

The Region of Murcia travels with Renfe rules: the Dogs up to 40 kg extra applies on covered services marked with the paw icon at purchase, while Iryo does not list origin stations in the region for its large-dog service. Chains with published pet programs are verified in our directory, and beach access on its coast is municipal and seasonal: check each town's current ordinance.

Getting there with your dog

By rail the verified path is Renfe: the Dogs up to 40 kg extra (40 EUR on AVE, Avlo and Larga Distancia, a general-fare ticket on Avant and Media Distancia, online up to 24 hours before) on trains marked with the paw icon, and the general Cercanias rule of pets free with leash and muzzle where those services exist. Iryo's listed large-dog origin stations do not include the Region of Murcia. Flying in, the cabin rules and fees for Iberia, Vueling and Air Europa are in our cabin guide.

Where to sleep

NH and B&B Hotels publish pet programs verified in our directory, and Paradores lists which of its properties admit pets. Per-hotel conditions always apply: close every booking with the 5 written questions from our Spain hotels guide, and sitter marketplaces with verified sites (Rover, Gudog) are in the directory for the stretches a hotel does not cover.

Verified dog-access beaches

Only the ones we checked on the council's own site, with the date. The list grows as we verify more, and municipal rules change with the season.

Mazarron: Las Cobaticas, Las Moreras and El Gachero Mazarron

Three coastal areas in Mazarron. Las Cobaticas sits between Bolnuevo and Percheles and the leaflet describes it as hard to reach, Las Moreras is in a semi-urban setting and El Gachero is urban and stony.

  • The council leaflet says it has enabled three wide coastal areas so dog owners can enjoy the beaches with their pets.
  • Dogs classed as potentially dangerous must wear a muzzle, and the owner is responsible for any damage the animal causes.
  • You must carry the animal's paperwork in order (veterinary passport and identification card), and pets must be dewormed internally and externally.
  • On fines there is a discrepancy between the leaflet and the ordinance the council publishes, explained just below.
  • Of the three, the leaflet describes Las Moreras as suitable for walking your pet at any time of year.

The leaflet's fines do not match the ordinance it cites

If you need the exact figure, ask the council. The leaflet announces fines of 750 to 3,001 EUR citing the municipal animal-keeping ordinance, and the text of that ordinance published on its site, approved in 2003, sets fines of 60 to 450 EUR by severity in article 38. Three explanations fit and we cannot choose between them: the leaflet may refer to another rule (the ordinance itself points to Law 50/1999 and Law 10/1990), the published PDF may be outdated after 23 years, or the leaflet may be wrong. Both documents are linked below.

Frequently asked questions

Can my large dog take the train to Murcia?

With Renfe yes, on trains marked with the paw icon at purchase, under the Dogs up to 40 kg extra (40 EUR on AVE, Avlo and Larga Distancia, a general-fare ticket on Avant and Media Distancia). Iryo's listed large-dog origin stations do not include the Region of Murcia.

Are dogs allowed on the beaches?

It is decided beach by beach by each town hall and changes with the season. Check the current municipal ordinance of the specific beach: we publish verified beach lists only as we check them. The ones we have already checked are in the list on this page.

Which verified options help with lodging?

NH and B&B Hotels publish pet programs and Paradores lists its pet-admitting properties, all verified in our directory, plus sitter marketplaces with verified sites like Rover and Gudog. Conditions are always per property: ask the 5 written questions.

What do I do with my dog at museums or indoor sights that do not admit dogs?

Museums, monuments and most indoor venues do not admit dogs (assistance-dog rules are a separate track). The practical option is hourly sitters: our directory lists verified marketplaces like Rover and Gudog, with prices set by each sitter. Book ahead in high season.

Can I leave my dog alone in the hotel room?

It depends on the property: admission is per hotel and leaving a dog alone in the room is often forbidden or limited. Ask in writing before booking, it is one of the 5 questions in our Spain hotels guide, and for long visits check the hourly sitters in our directory.

Does my dog need paperwork to come from another region of Spain?

Within Spain you cross no borders: carry the health booklet with the microchip and vaccines up to date. The exact rabies-vaccination obligation is set by each region and we do not publish what we have not verified, so check it before leaving. For entering Spain from abroad, the EU paperwork in our EU rules guide applies.
